This small
courtyard at California State University Channel Islands was given a tropical,
zen-like feeling, perfect for relief after a hard day’s work. Plants are mostly
part-shade due to the small distance between the buildings, and a water feature
was added to drown out noise from the surrounding area. Ground cover consists
of the beautiful blue-flowering Campanula, accented by the vibrant reds of
Begonia dragon wing and the white trumpet-shaped flowers of Calla Lily.
Cordyline was used for height to soften walls, and Fuchsia was added to attract
hummingbirds.
This yard had
been taken over by unsightly crab grass, which in addition to the dying avocado
tree made it very difficult to manage. To save water, everything in the yard
was removed and replaced with low water use plants, with a simple color palette
of blues and whites sprinkled with hints of other hues. This backyard comes to
life with a central stone pathway and bench, making this space very intimate
and relaxing. The picture on the right is approximately 6 months after
completion.
This large
ranch house with acreage needed a large focal point, and a 5 thousand gallon
water feature was installed to create this. A naturalistic visual effect was
desired, and this was achieved with plants such as Phormium, Miscanthus &
Pennisetum, which beautifully complement the surrounding grasses. Water
features include two upper pools which flow down under a decorative wooden
bridge and into the main koi pond. A flagstone pathway winds around the pond
and through the yard, completing this beautiful landscape.
In this brand
new track home construction, a large corner lot needed an area for entertaining
adults and children, while still providing relaxation and privacy. Large,
double queen palms were used in selective placement around the perimeter to
partially obscure neighboring windows, and uplighting was added for beautiful
evening effect. Plant selections used were a combination of tropical and
English style, mixing Phormiums and grasses with roses and color. River stones were
arranged in a border around the lawn, and larger stones were placed in regular
intervals for seating. This backyard was created to give a feeling of vacation
and resort.
